STUDY TOURS & EVENTS

The Alexandria Association offers enriching opportunities beyond its monthly programs. Study tours have included Georgian houses in Ireland and Scotland abroad as well as numerous homes, gardens and historic sites stretching from Philadelphia to North Carolina.

A tour of historic homes in Alexandria and reception at the Boyhood Home of Robert E. Lee on May 2 ; a house tour and garden party at Arch Hall on Belmont Bay on May 3

A “Palladio in Philadelphia” tour featuring the Powell House, Bartram House and Garden, Woodford and Mount Pleasant

1999 Spring Event on May 22 and 23:
A tour of historic homes in Alexandria and reception at The Lyceum highlighting the opening of the Alexandria 250th Anniversary exhibit on May 22; a champagne garden party in Delaplane on May 23

2008 Study Tour of Scotland’s Castles, Estates, Homes & Gardens from June 26 to July 7:
In addition to architectural tours of Edinburgh and Glasgow, tours of the Palace of Holyroodhouse, Culross Abbey, Kinross House & Gardens, the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, Touch Estate, Cromlix House, Ascog House Fenery, Mount Stuart House, Drumlanrig Castle, Holmwood House, Inverary Castle, Strachar House, Culzean Castle and Dumfries House

2009 Study Tour on April 4 and 5:
A tour of Northern Neck homes, including Blandfield, Edenetta, Sabine Hall, the ruins of Menokin, Stratford Hall and Mount Airy

2009 Spring Event on May 2:
A tour of historic homes in Alexandria and reception at the Lee-Fendall House Museum & Garden

2010 Study Tour on April 10 and 11:
A tour to Tidewater Virginia, including Rural Plains in Hanover County, Chelsea Plantation and Elsing Green in King William County, the Matthew Jones House in Fort Eustis, Newport News, an exterior tour of St. Luke’s Church in the Isle of Wight County, and Bacon’s Castle and Four Mile Tree in Surry County

2010 Spring Event on April 24:
A “Collections, Compounds, and Cocktails” sponsors reception at the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum followed by a “Dining through the Decades” five-course dinner at The Athenaeum

2011 Study Tour on April 2 and 3:
A tour of architectural and historical sites in and around Richmond, including Westover Plantation, Hancock-Wirt-Caskie House, Monumental Church, Egyptian Building, Valentine Museum/John Wickham House, Wilton House Museum, Tuckahoe Plantation and Brook Hill

A tour of the Historic Congressional Cemetery monuments followed by a reception

2012 Spring Tour on April 14 and 15:
A tour of Orange and Albemarle County, including James Madison’s Montpelier, “The Lawn” and Rotunda of the University of Virginia, Blue Ridge Farm, Monticello, Redlands and Bloomsbury

2012 Study Tour on December 1 and 2:
A tour of the Carnegie Museum of Art’s exhibition “Inventing the Modern World: Decorative Arts at the World’s Fairs 1851-1939,” Clayton, the Frick Art Museum’s exhibition “Impressions of Interiors: Gilded Age Paintings by Walter Gay” and the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens

2013 Study Tour on November 2 and 3:
A tour of Winchester, including Long Branch Historic House and Farm, the Burwell-Morgan Mill, Carter Hall, Clermont Farm, the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley, Cherry Row, Long Green, Fort Loudoun and Belle Grove

A conservator’s tour of the Constantino Brumidi Corridors of the U.S. Senate

A tour of the State Department’s Diplomatic Reception Rooms

2018 Study Tour on February 24:
A tour to Richmond for the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts exhibition “Terracotta Army” and a tour of Masons’ Hall

A walking tour of notable Alexandria sites during its Civil War occupation

A tour to Middleburg

2019 Study Tour on October 19 and 20:
A tour of Norfolk, including the Chrysler Museum of Art, Moses Myers House, Willoughby-Baylor House and The Mariners’ Museum and Park

There were no Study Tours scheduled for 2020 and 2021 due to Covid-19 and Omicron.

A tour to Newport and Providence, including major colonial and eighteenth-century sites in Newport and Rosecliff, Marble House, Bellevue House, Redwood Library, Newport Art Museum, Edith Wharton's Lands End and Greenvale Winery; in Providence, Clouds Hill, the John Brown House and the Rhode Island School of Design Museum.
